Fence Replacement Cost in Texas (2026): Cedar, Pipe and More
Texas backyards are fenced mostly in cedar, with pipe and tube-steel fencing common on rural and ranch land. Sun, clay soil that shifts posts, and Gulf Coast humidity all shorten a fence's life, so many homeowners replace rather than patch after 15 years or so. The ranges below are installed prices per linear foot (LF) from 2026 guides, most of them Texas-specific. Prices differ a lot between sources, so read the "where sources disagree" section before you compare bids.
| Fence type or job | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 6-ft cedar privacy, statewide | $25–$55 per LF [1] |
| 6-ft cedar privacy, typical Texas suburb | $35–$45 per LF; a 150-ft run about $5,250–$6,750 before gates and permits [1] |
| 6-ft cedar privacy, Dallas–Fort Worth | $25–$45 per LF, about $4,000–$9,000 for 150–200 ft [2] |
| 6-ft cedar board-on-board, DFW | $35–$55 per LF [2] |
| Cedar privacy, Houston | $20–$45 per LF [3] |
| Pressure-treated pine, 6-ft | $18–$35 per LF statewide [1] |
| Pipe / tube-steel ranch fence, Houston | $15–$40 per LF, priced by gauge and rail count [3] |
| Ranch, field or barbed-wire fence, Houston | $3–$12 per LF [3] |
| Chain link, 6-ft | $20–$35 per LF statewide [1] |
| Old fence tear-out and haul-off | $3–$8 per LF (DFW) [2]; $3–$10 per LF (Houston) [3] |
| Single walk gate | $150–$800 (DFW) [2]; $200–$800 (Houston) [3] |
| Double drive gate | $400–$900+ (DFW) [2]; $600–$2,500 (Houston) [3] |
| Permit, where required | $50–$200; many like-for-like replacements are exempt [2] |
| Cedar fence, national average | $6,500 for 200 ft; most pay $3,700–$9,300 [4] |
Where the sources disagree
The biggest gap is between published ranges and one DFW builder's own price list. Statewide and DFW guides put standard 6-ft cedar at roughly $25–$55 per LF [1][2], while i30 Builders in DFW lists $62 per LF for 6-ft cedar and $72 per LF for board-on-board, with project minimums starting at $6,500 [5]. That price includes a workmanship warranty and normal cleanup, but stain, gates and demo are billed separately [5]. Expect established, insured firms to quote near or above the top of the published ranges, and very cheap bids to use thinner pickets or wood posts.
What moves the price
- Height and style. Board-on-board and 8-ft fences cost more than standard side-by-side 6-ft privacy [2][5].
- Post type. Steel posts hold up better in shifting clay than wood posts, and they raise the per-foot price [2].
- Tear-out. Some bids include removing the old fence and some don't, which is worth $3–$10 per foot [2][3].
- Gates. Each gate is a separate line item, and drive gates cost far more than walk gates [2][3].
- Stain and sealing. Houston contractors quote $2–$6 per LF to stain or seal, every 2–3 years [3].
- HOA rules. Many HOAs require board-on-board on street-facing runs, which raises the cost [2].
Practical tips
- Get two or three bids priced per linear foot, and check that each one lists picket grade, post type, tear-out and gates.
- Ask your city whether a like-for-like replacement needs a permit [2], and check HOA rules before you pick a style.
- If a storm knocked the fence down, take photos before cleanup for any insurance claim [3]. For roof damage from the same storm, see our hail damage and insurance claim guide.
