AC Repair Cost in Texas (2026): Capacitor, Compressor & Refrigerant Leaks

Texas air conditioners run hard for months at a time, so parts like capacitors and fan motors tend to wear out sooner than in milder climates. Before you approve a repair, it helps to know what the common fixes usually cost. The figures below are national 2026 estimates from published cost guides; Texas prices generally fall inside these ranges, and the sources don't always agree, so we show each one.

RepairTypical installed cost (parts + labor)
Service call / diagnostic fee$75–$200 [1][4]; national average about $110 [3]
Capacitor replacement$100–$250 [1]; $150–$400, average $250 [2]; single $125–$350, dual-run $150–$450 [3]
Contactor replacement$200–$450 [1]; $150–$400 [2][4]
Condenser fan motor$200–$700 [1][2]; $300–$900 [3]
Refrigerant leak detection$100–$330 [1]; $150–$500 [4]
Refrigerant leak repair + recharge$200–$1,500 [1][2]; average about $600 [2]
Recharge only (R-410A)$100–$320 [1]; $200–$800 (R-410A or R-454B) [4]
Recharge only (older R-22 systems)$180–$600 [1]
Hard start kit$100–$270 [1]; $200–$500 [4]
Evaporator coil replacement$1,000–$4,500 [1]; $800–$2,000 [2]; $1,000–$3,000 [4]
Compressor replacement$1,800–$2,800 out of warranty [1]; $1,500–$3,000, average $2,200 [2]; $1,200–$4,500 [3]

Labor alone typically runs $75–$150 an hour, and $160–$250 an hour for nights, weekends and holidays [1]. Many companies credit the diagnostic fee toward the repair if you go ahead with it [1].

What moves the price

Capacitor, compressor or refrigerant: what the symptoms usually mean

A failing capacitor often shows up as an AC that hums but won't start, hesitates, or shuts off shortly after starting [2]. It's one of the most common failures in hot climates, and the part itself costs only about $10–$50 [2], so a big markup is mostly labor and the trip fee.

Low refrigerant always means a leak; refrigerant doesn't get used up [1]. Paying for a top-off without finding the leak usually means paying again next summer. Ask what leak test they'll use and whether the price includes fixing the leak.

Compressors are replaced, not repaired on site [1], which is why this is the repair most likely to push you toward a new system.

Repair or replace?

HomeGuide's rules of thumb: consider replacing if the unit is more than 10 years old, uses R-22, needs frequent repairs, or the repair costs at least half the price of a new system; another test is whether the repair cost multiplied by the system's age tops $5,000 [1].
