Sewer Line Replacement Cost in Texas (2026): Per-Foot Prices & Methods
Much of Texas sits on expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks in drought, and buried sewer pipe moves with it. Over the years that causes offset joints and "bellies," low spots where the line loses its slope and holds water [1]. Most Texas homes are also built on slabs, so the cost depends heavily on whether the broken pipe is out in the yard or under the house [1]. The figures below come from 2026 published cost guides, two of them Texas-specific.
| Job | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Full sewer line replacement, Texas | $3,800–$13,500 per project; $55–$180 per foot [1] |
| Sewer line replacement, Dallas | Average $4,803; most pay $1,741–$6,572; about $150 per foot average [2] |
| Sewer line replacement, national | Average $6,000; typical $2,000–$10,000; $50–$250 per foot [3] |
| Under-slab drain line work, Texas | $150–$400 per foot, often over $15,000 [1] |
| Pipe bursting (trenchless) | $60–$200 per foot [3] |
| Cured-in-place lining (CIPP) | $90–$250 per foot [3] |
| Sewer camera inspection | $125–$500, average $280; $175–$750 with no cleanout [4] |
| Hydrostatic (leak) test of under-slab drains | $150–$400 [1] |
| Snaking / hydro jetting | $200–$500 / $600–$1,400 [3] |
| Adding a cleanout | $500–$2,000 [3] |
Prices by Texas metro
SewerLine Lab's August 2026 survey puts Austin highest at $85–$180 per foot, because Hill Country rock adds cost. Dallas–Fort Worth runs $70–$165, Houston $65–$160 (dewatering is often needed because of the high water table), San Antonio $60–$150, and smaller metros and rural areas $55–$130 [1]. Angi's Dallas figure of about $150 per foot [2] sits near the top of SewerLine Lab's DFW range. The national per-foot ranges [3] are broader, but the typical totals overlap.
What moves the price
- Outside or under the slab. This is the biggest swing in Texas. The yard line from the foundation to the city main is comparatively cheap. Under-slab lines mean cutting concrete, digging by hand and restoring floors [1]. Tunneling under the slab from outside can avoid the flooring bill, so ask whether it's an option [1].
- Length. Partial repairs may cover only 1–15 feet, while most full replacements are around 40 feet [3]. Dallas homes typically need 30–40 feet [2].
- Method. Trenchless bursting and lining save yard and driveway restoration. Lining coats the inside of the existing pipe [3], so ask whether yours is intact enough to line.
- What's on top. Concrete removal adds $3–$8 per sq ft [3].
- Rock and groundwater. In the Hill Country and San Antonio, ask for a stated rock-excavation rate. Around Houston, ask for a stated dewatering rate rather than an open change order [1].
- Permits and inspection. Permits run $30–$500 depending on the city [3]. Dallas charges a $125 inspection fee per trade [2].
The Texas foundation connection
In a slab house on clay, a leaking under-slab drain and a moving foundation are often the same problem. Water from the broken pipe soaks the clay under the slab and makes it swell [1]. If you're seeing new cracks or sticking doors, SewerLine Lab recommends a camera inspection and a hydrostatic test before calling a foundation company [1]. See our guides to foundation repair cost in Texas and slab leak repair cost, which covers supply-line leaks under the slab.
Practical tips
- Recurring backups that "clear up" after snaking can point to a belly, not a clog [1]. Pay for a camera inspection before paying for a third cleaning.
- Ask for the camera video and a written report showing where the defect is and how many feet need replacing.
- Get two or three bids that state the method, footage, pipe material, restoration, and permit.
- Sewer work in Texas needs a licensed plumber, with a Responsible Master Plumber pulling the permit [1]. Here's how to check a Texas plumber's license.
